How To Get to the
Northern Italian Lakes

By plane, by train, by shuttle service

We are located on the southern most end of the Alps, in the area among Lombardy (Italy), Piedmont (Italy) and Canton of Ticino (Italian speaking part of Switzerland).

By plane

There’s a small airport in Lugano with flights from Geneva and Zurich.

By train

The area is well-integrated both into the Swiss railway network:

  1. via Gotthard Pass (through Swiss Alps) and via Bellinzona and Como,
  2. via Simplon Pass (through Swiss Alps) and via Stresa on Lake Maggiore and Gallarate.

and into the Italian railway network via Milan and via Como.

Timetables

The railways are operateded by several companies:

  • Trenitalia: national railway company of Italy

  • Trenord: an Italian regional company

  • SBB CFF FFS: national railway company of Switzerland

  • Tilo: a Swiss regional company

Remember to validate your ticket in validating machine before getting on the train if you can't buy your ticket on line.

Travelling by train with your bike

You can take your bike on the train with you, but pay attention to transport conditions of the railway companies.

By shuttle service

Let us know your arrival time in Milan Malpensa Airport or in Milan Linate Airport so we will arrange the transfer.
The shuttle service has to pay directly to the driver by credit card:

  1. From/to Malpensa to/from Varese. Van maximum 8 people: 90 euro in total. Car maximum 2 people (without bike bags): 70 euro in total,
  2. From/to Malpensa to/from Colmegna. Van maximum 8 people: 160 euro in total. Car maximum 2 people (without bike bags): 120 euro in total.

By bus when you are in Varese

(On foot 2 km - 1.2 mile). Once arrived at “VARESE NORD” rail station (belonging to Trenord railway line) or at “VARESE” rail station (belonging to Trenitalia railway line) you take the bus line E in VIA ORRIGONI directed to BIZZOZERO, every 15 minutes approx (on the bus there is the sign “E – BIZZOZERO”). Look at: Bus line E
VARESE NORD” rail station is 650 meters away from bus stop, and there is a underground passage with steps. 
VARESE” rail station is 200 meters away from bus stop. 
The ticket is 1,40 euro. It’s possible to pay bus ticket on board with coins (only 1 Euro, 10 cents or 20 cents coins). 
Get off the bus at the fifth stop BORRI - BUENOS AIRES. It’s the next stop after a ENI-AGIP petrol station (on the right hand side), the Varese hospital (on the left hand side) and a traffic light. 
At the bus stop go straight for 100 metres. The hotel is on the right hand side.

Varese

How to get to Varese from Malpensa Airport Terminal 2:

Timetable
Connection every every 60 minutes. Timing 47 mim. (No change).

Take the train direction "MENDRISIO-BELLINZONA", but you have to get off at VARESE. (Varese is the 5th stop after Malpensa Terminal 1).

Colmegna on Lake Maggiore

How to get to Colmegna from Malpensa Airport Terminal 2:

Connection: 13.13 - 15.13 – 17.13 – 19.13. Timing 2 h. 10 mim. (1 change at Gallarate).

See the route on Malpensa-Varese connection - S50 Line. It's the brown line (S50) from Malpensa to Gallarate, then the green line (S30) from Gallarate to Colmegna.

First section: take the train direction "VARESE-MENDRISIO-BELLINZONA", but you have to get off at GALLARATE. (Gallarate is the 4th stop after Malpensa Terminal 1). On the dispaly of the station or on the display of the train you can see "S50 - BELLINZONA".
Second section: take the train direction "LUINO-CADENAZZO", but you have to get off at COLMEGNA.

How to get to Malpensa Airport from Colmegna:

Timetable
Connection: 6.37 - 8.37 - 14.37 - 16.37 - 18.37. Timing 2 h. 10 mim. (1 change at Gallarate).
